The OSU School of Global Studies and Partnerships will be hosting Dr. Payam Mohseni as part of its Iranian and Persian Gulf Studies speaker series. Escalation between the U.S. and Iran has greatly increased in recent years following the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal and the imposition of severe economic sanctions. The U.S. maximum pressure policy, however, has so far not brought Iran back to the negotiating table and has resulted in increased Iranian counter measures in places such as Iraq and Yemen. The recent U.S. assassination of Iranian General Qasem Suleimani has greatly increased ongoing tensions and portends to only further disrupt the regional equation. Dr. Payam Mohseni, lecturer in the Department of Government at Harvard University and former director of the Iran Project, will explore how Iranian strategy responds to U.S. foreign policy developments in the Middle East and what the future of the U.S.-Iran confrontation holds.
